Before starting, preheat the oven to 425ºF.Remove 1 tbsp butter from the fridge and set aside in a warm place to soften.Wash and dry all produce. Zest, then juice one orange.Add cream, orange juice and orange zest to a medium pot over medium-high heat. Cook, stirring occasionally, until cream comes to a simmer. Immediately remove pot from the heat and place in the fridge to cool slightly, 10 min.
Meanwhile, cut buns into 1-inch pieces. Grease an 9x13-inch baking dish with 1 tbsp softened butter.Whisk together cream mixture, eggs, cinnamon, 1/2 tsp salt and brown sugar in a large bowl. Add bun pieces and chocolate chips, then stir to coat bread with liquid.Transfer bread mixture to the prepared baking dish.Cover baking dish with foil and bake in the middle of the oven for 30 min. Carefully remove foil, then continue to bake until top is golden-brown, 10-15 min.
Core, then cut apple into 1/2-inch pieces.Cut a piece off the top and bottom ends of orange. Place a flat end on a cutting board, then cut the peel away from the flesh from top to bottom, turning orange as you go. When peeled completely, slip a paring knife along each side of the "membranes" (the white lines) of each orange slice to release the segments. Halve segments.Peel, then cut kiwi into 1/2-inch pieces.Place apple, orange and kiwi in a large bowl, then toss to combine.
Allow chocolate orange French toast bake to cool on a wire rack for 3-5 min before serving. Divide French toast bake between plates, then, using a fine mesh sieve, dust icing sugar over top. (NOTE: For a sweeter option, drizzle with maple syrup or honey from your pantry!)Serve fruit salad on the side.
