Cooking Steps

1
  • Before starting, preheat the oven to 350F.
  • Grease the base and sides of an 8x8-inch baking dish with 2 tsp oil, then line the base and sides with parchment paper, leaving a 2-inch overhang off the sides. (TIP: The overhang will make it easy for you to remove the bars from the pan later.)
  • Melt 8 tbsp butter in the microwave or small pot.
  • Halve, core, then cut apples into 1/2-inch pieces.
  • Add apples and 1 tsp cinnamon to a small bowl, then toss to combine.
2
  • Add melted butter, brown sugar, half the white sugar, 1 tbsp maple syrup and egg to a large bowl, then whisk to combine. Add 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking soda and 1/2 tsp cinnamon, then whisk to combine. Add flour, then stir with a spatula until fully combined.
  • Add cinnamon apples to batter, then stir with a spatula until combined.
  • Scrape mixture into prepared baking tin, then spread into an even layer using a spatula.
3
  • Bake in the middle of the oven for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and a knife inserted into the middle comes out clean.
  • Transfer baking tin to a wire rack to cool for 10 minutes before transferring to the fridge for 1hr to cool completely.
  • Meanwhile, add powdered sugar, remaining maple syrup, a pinch of salt and 1 tbsp milk in a medium bowl, then whisk to combine.
4
  • Remove bars from the tin by gently tugging on the edges of the parchment paper.
  • Cut into 12 pieces, then drizzle with maple glaze.
  • Sprinkle flaky salt over top.
